The Different Types of Bone Fractures
Though there are many different types of broken bones, the most common are stress fractures, displaced fractures and compound fractures:
- A stress fracture is typically one that occurs over a period of time, though it may occasionally result from undue stress caused by a single incident. With a stress fracture, the bone commonly remains structurally intact, with cracking or separation in the bone. The National Institute of Health estimates that as many as one in five sports-related fractures are stress fractures.
- With a displaced fracture, commonly the result of trauma, the bone breaks into two or more sections, with the ends typically not lining up
- A compound fracture, also referred to an “open” fracture, happens when some part of the bone penetrates through the skin

Often, you’ll be able to look at the area of injury and see the bone out of place or misshapen. Another telltale sign is an inability to either move the limb or put any weight on it. Of course, there will commonly be substantial pain and swelling, any you may experience numbness or tingling.
