Temporary or Permanent Loss of Feeling or Control | Paraplegia | Tetraplegia | Quadriplegia

When you’ve suffered any type of trauma to your back, neck or spinal cord, the possibility of some level of paralysis becomes immediately real. Paralysis may be temporary, the result of bruising or inflammation along your spinal cord, or it may be permanent. Regardless, it can change your life dramatically. When the carelessness or negligence of another person causes you either temporary or permanent paralysis, you have the right to seek full and fair compensation for your losses. Attorney Michael R. De La Paz can help.

What Are the Common Causes of Traumatic Paralysis?

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, motor vehicle accidents and slips and falls account for the highest percentage of paralyzing injuries. It’s estimated that nearly 40% of all spinal cord injuries occur in car, truck and motorcycle accidents. Sports injuries, work-related injuries and physical assaults also contribute significantly to the number of traumatic spine injuries.

What Are the Different Types of Paralysis Injuries?

Paralysis can result from any injury that impedes the communication between the brain, the spinal cord and the body. Though most paralysis stems from spinal cord injury, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can also lead to some level of paralysis.

Paralysis is commonly categorized as:

  • Paraplegia—This involves the loss of sensation in or control of two limbs, specifically your lower body. Paraplegia may affect your abdomen and chest, but if it limits use of your arms, it’s either tetraplegia or quadriplegia.
  • Tetraplegia or quadriplegia—When your spinal cord injuries are closer to your neck, you may experience the loss of feeling in or control of all four limbs. For a long time, this condition has been known as “quadriplegia,” but the term “tetraplegia” also gets used to describe the same condition—the prefix “tetra” comes from the Greek for “four.”
