NHTSA Projects New Rule Will Reduce Rear-End Collisions

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finalized a new rule that will require make automatic emergency braking systems a standard feature on all passenger and light trucks within five years. The technology uses sensors to detect objects that may pose a collision risk and automatically engages the brakes to minimize the likelihood of a crash. With most systems, the driver receives a warning of the potential collision before the brakes are applied.

The Risk of Injury in a Rear-End Collision

According to statistics gathered by the NHTSA, rear-end collisions are the most frequent type of motor vehicle accident, accounting for almost one of every three crashes (29%). The data indicates a number of reasons for this:

  • Distracted driving—Paying attention to a handheld device, the car radio, a passenger or a roadside distraction rather than the road in front of you
  • Reckless driving, including excessive speed or tailgating
  • Driving while impaired
  • Failing to adapt to inclement weather conditions

New Rule Requires Installation of Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

In April, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized the rule mandating automatic emergency braking systems on all passenger vehicles and light trucks by September 2029. Officials at the NHTSA project that making such safety mechanisms standard equipment will reduce traffic fatalities nationwide by approximately 360 per year and also contribute to a significant reduction in the number of motor vehicle accident injuries (an estimated 24,000 fewer per year).
