Car Accident Causes

Car crashes are common enough that we have names for different types of car crashes. Some types are more common than others and are known for causing serious injury. However, whether you’re driving in Denton, McAllen or some other city in Texas, any car accident can result in harm and the need for medical treatment.

Rear-end Crashes

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-end accidents occur more frequently than any other type of vehicle accident. In fact, they account for 29 percent of all vehicle collisions.

Common reasons for rear-end collisions are:

  • Distracted driving
  • Tailgating
  • Speeding
  • Slow reaction and not braking in time

Head-on Collisions

Head on collisions occur when two cars traveling in opposite directions collide, front end to front end. While a small percentage of car crashes are head-on collisions, they are the most dangerous type of accident with a high number of fatalities. Substantial impact can occur because the speed and momentum of each vehicle is in direct opposition to the other vehicle. These accidents are prevalent when drivers lose control and cross a median or drift into oncoming traffic.

T-Bone Accidents

A T-bone or broadside accident takes place when the front end of one vehicle hits the side of another vehicle. T-bones usually occur due to right-of-way issues. For example, a driver running a red light or stop sign crashes into a car making a left turn. In addition, 18-wheelers have blind spots and may not see a vehicle along side them when making a turn.

Sideswipe Accidents

Two vehicles can sideswipe when traveling beside each other on a freeway. One driver doesn’t see the other car and tries to make a lane change. Failing to look or to observe a blind spot that obscures the other vehicle are often the causes. When merging onto a freeway it’s vital to check mirrors and even turn your head to be sure the lane you’re entering is free of cars.
