How Much Do Texans Drive? How Accident Prone Are People in the Lone Star State?
The Texas Department of Transportation has compiled and published comprehensive driving and accident statistics in Texas for calendar year 2023, which showed a significant decrease in the number of traffic fatalities over the prior year. Though the Lone Star State did not have a single day in 2023 without a traffic death, the number of fatalities dropped nearly 3%, from 4,283 to 4,407, even though the number of miles driven increased by 1.3% (nearly 4 billion miles).
The Key Driving and Accident Statistics in Texas in 2023
In general, the statistics from 2023 reflect a positive trend, with fewer actual accidents and fatalities and significantly more miles on the road:
- Texas drivers logged an estimated 295 billion miles behind the wheel in 2023, up from approximately 291 billion in 2022
- Traffic deaths were down 2.81%. Combined with the greater number of miles driven, the actual reduction in traffic fatalities was 4.1%
- There were slightly more traffic fatalities in rural areas (52.8%) than in urban areas
Age appeared to be one of the primary risk factors for fatal accidents
Drivers between the ages of 19 and 23 accounted for the most traffic fatalities. According to a report for the Texas DOT, every age group between 19 and 23 had at least 91 fatalities, and ages 21-23 all had in excess of 100 traffic deaths. There were only four other age groups that exceeded 90 fatalities.
