Self-driving trucks are a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that could change the trucking industry. In August of 2019, Kodiak Robotics began putting their automated trucks on Texas highways.

According to Kodiak Robotics, over 4,000 people in America died during 2018 in commercial truck accidents. Research indicated that human error caused 90% of these accidents.

How can trucks guided by AI reduce the human error factor? Some of the ways are by eliminating the following:

  • Texting while driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Distracted or drowsy driving
  • Speeding
  • Not staying in the right lane
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Avoiding busy highways during rush hour

Advantages that AI Provides for Trucking Companies

Efficiency alone is a factor for trucking carriers. Self-driving trucks can travel on the road for longer hours, virtually 24/7. Stops would include refueling or self-diagnosed maintenance and picking up loads. There will be less wear and tear on the truck because the AI will always abide by speed limits. In addition, companies do not have to worry about drivers getting sick or injured.

Are the Trucks Completely Self-Driving?

There are some things AI cannot do. At this point, a driver is necessary for a truck’s entry and exit off the freeway. Also, AI has not reached the point where it would be reliable in city traffic. Bikes, pets and pedestrians are complex factors that AI has not yet learned to navigate. For now, Kodiak’s self-driving trucks are designed for long-haul trucking on freeways. Even so, Texas is the perfect state for them due to its wide expanse of freeways that span from Dallas to Corpus Christi and from Longview to Lubbock. Kodiak’s trucks can handle light to moderate rain and drive day or night. They are not yet capable of dealing with freezing weather.
