What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury is one that stems from an accident of some sort, rather than as a consequence of disease, stroke or degenerative condition. As a general rule, a TBI involves a sudden, unanticipated injury caused by some external force, such as impact with a foreign object or a bump or blow to the head from a moving object.

How Common Is Traumatic Brain Injury?

According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 1.5 million people seek medical treatment every year for some level of traumatic brain injury. The Centers for Disease Control found that more than 200,000 people were admitted to a hospital because of a TBI.

What Are the Different Levels of Traumatic Brain Injury?

While loss of consciousness is not necessary to be diagnosed with a TBI, it’s fairly common. When that loss of consciousness lasts less than half an hour, the traumatic brain injury is commonly referred to as mild (also known as a “concussion”). When the unconsciousness persists for more than 30 minutes, but less than a day, the traumatic brain injury will usually be deemed moderate. Injuries involving longer periods of unconsciousness are considered severe.

The vast majority of traumatic brain injuries—estimates are around 60%–are diagnosed as mild. Most victims of mild TBI experience a full recovery within 6 weeks to two months.
