How can you keep your teen driver safe?
Teenage driving crashes are a leading cause of teen deaths. In fact, teenage drivers are more at risk for car accidents than drivers in other age groups. The elements that come into play with teen driving put them prone to accidents.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 2,400 U.S. teens died in motor vehicle crashes in 2019. They were between the ages of 13 to 19. The age group of 16-19 year-olds are at the highest risk for vehicle accidents. In fact, they are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than drivers who are 20 or older. Furthermore, male teens are two times more likely to die in crashes than female drivers of the same age.
Why are teens more prone to car crashes?
Various factors contribute to teen car accidents, including:
- Lack of driving experience
- Undeveloped ability to spot hazards and respond appropriately
- Tailgating tendency
- Inclination to speed
- More adversely affected by alcohol

- Set up driving rules and consequences for breaking the rules (speeding, texting while driving, etc.)
- Set good examples for your teenager by driving safely
- Advise them about drunk driving laws
- Prohibit your teen from driving if they are tired
- Restrict peer passengers and night driving during the first year after they acquire their license
