Police Uncertain of Cause of Wrongful Death at Hot Springs Resort
Local fire and law enforcement officials confirmed last month that a construction worker on a jobsite at The Colony, north of Dallas, was killed in late September. While the accident remains under investigation, early reports suggest that the fatality occurred when a tractor on the project rolled over sideways and crushed the worker. Video footage from the scene showed a JCB telehandler on its side. The telehandler, while similar to a forklift, is commonly used during construction, whereas a forklift is typically used after construction is complete.
According to a spokesperson from The Colony’s Fire Marshal’s office, the victim was working on the site of a hot springs resort, known as WorldSprings, which is scheduled to open to the public next spring. It’s unknown at this point whether the worker who was killed was a pedestrian or was actually operating the telehandler at the time it fell on its side. One study, conducted over a 15-year-period, found that nearly half of all persons injured in heavy equipment rollovers on construction sites were operating the equipment at the time of the accident. Industry watchdogs say it common for operators to ignore seatbelts and other safety equipment while working.
