What Are the Different Types of Burn Injuries? What Is the Prognosis for Recovery?
The are few injuries with more potential for long-term, devastating consequences than burn injuries. In addition to the persistent pain often resulting from a burn injury, there is often a significant likelihood of infection, loss of bodily fluids, loss of body temperature, bone and joint problems, and permanent scarring or disfigurement. If you have suffered any type of burn injury, the Law Office of Michael R. De La Paz can help.
The Common Types of Burn Injuries
According to the American Burn Association, more than 1,300 people across America seek treatment at a hospital or other medical facility for a burn injury in any given day. One of every four victims is under the age of 16. The burns are commonly classified as:
- 1st-degree or superficial burns, which typically cause a slight reddening of the spot of the burn, as well as minor discomfort, but don’t generally involve blistering or any long-term tissue damage. Virtually all people who suffer a 1st-degree burn can expect a full recovery within a few days.
- 2nd-degree burns, also referred to as “partial thickness” burns, where the outer layer of skin suffers some level of damage, commonly from a blister. A 2nd-degree burn may cause temporary difficulties and may occasionally lead to scarring, but will usually heal within a couple weeks to a month.
- 3rd-degree, or “full thickness” burns, which commonly damage or destroy both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and the middle layer of skin (the dermis). In some instances, they will go to the subcutaneous tissue of the innermost layer of skin. Recovery from a 3rd-degree burn is possible, but it is typically a long and arduous process, taking anywhere from a month to a few years.
- 4th-degree burns, which go through all layers of skin and often damage muscle and bone. These burns typically destroy nerve endings, leaving victims without sensation in the affected areas.
