How can CoolSculpting cause injury?

Recently, super model Linda Evangelista settled the CoolSculpting injury claim she filed against Zeltiq Aesthetics. She had filed a $50 million lawsuit that alleged the procedure caused disfigurement and left her depressed.

What is CoolSculpting?

According to WebMD, CoolSculpting is the brand name for cryolipolysis, which is a method that freezes fat to get rid of fat cells. This method resulted from studies about frostbite and how it affected fat cells. During cold temperatures, fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin cells. Skin and other tissues remain unharmed. However, the frozen fat cells die, and your body’s immune system naturally gets rid of the dead cells. This procedure has proven effective in getting rid of fat when diet and exercise have failed.

What does the procedure involve?

Doctors use a device that consists of paddles to target the body areas and freeze them. No surgery or needles are involved. The paddles remain on the body for 35 minutes or up to an hour and 15 minutes. The procedure destroys about 1/5th or 1/4th of the fat cells in targeted areas. For some people, it takes a few months to see the results, but others see changes in a few weeks. Doctors perform the procedure in their office, and no recovery time is necessary. Patients can drive themselves home afterward.

What are the risks from having CoolSculpting done?

A small percentage of people (1%) experience paradoxical fat hyperplasia or paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). This condition causes the number of fat cells in the area to increase instead of decrease. While rare, the complication can result in large, firm masses under the skin in the area treated. Typically the mass is painless, but it can also change the person’s bodyweight.

Even so, the following symptoms are what the majority of people experience:

  • Intense cold
  • Pulling or tugging on the skin
  • Mild or moderate pain occurring afterward
  • Nerve pain

If you suffer from PAH, what is the remedy?

To get rid of PAH, you may need liposuction surgery (surgically removing fat) or a tummy tuck (surgery to remove fat and skin from your abdomen).

Because Linda Evangelista was a high profile model, she claimed the adverse effect of PAH destroyed her career. Her loss was financial but also emotional, leading to depression and emotional distress.
